Small Home Improvements

During our trip to Wal-Mart on Sunday, Selina and I raided the garden center for flowers and potting soil so that we could spruce up the stone ring around the Bradford Pear tree in the front yard. We want to replace the stone that's currently around the tree, but so far we haven't been able to find the kind we want. Anyway, we picked up all the old, nasty mulch that was in the ring, mixed in some fresh potting soil and plopped in some colorful flowers. While we were working, Ratchet and Dakota got a chance to hang out in the front yard. Dakota was surprisingly good and stayed in the yard while off her leash. Ratchet, on the other hand, decided he had other plans and wanted to go exploring -- which is why he ended up tied to a stake in the middle of the yard. Silly dog.

Selina plants flowers around the tree in the front yard.

For the back yard, Selina picked up two additional rose bushes to go along with the one that we'd already planted. They looked beautiful and smelled just as good. Selina and I made a small flower bed against the back fence and proceeded to plant them. Hopefully they'll grow up big and strong -- and beautiful!

To cap off the night, we moved the china cabinet that Selina's parents gave us (and that I re-stained on Saturday to match the rest of the furniture) into the dining room. I was a little upset with myself because it wasn't perfect (I'm a perfectionist), but Selina convinced me that it actually looked really good. After getting it all set up, I have to agree. The only thing left to do is put the glass doors back on, but there are some pieces missing that I need to round up at Home Depot.

Who Gives An Octo-Crap?

"I was shocked. I really didn't think there would be anybody, just a few people, in front of the house...this is beyond anything I expected..."

What? Who hires a publicist (three, to be exact) if they are not expecting this kind of attention? This woman is a conniving lunatic and she's playing the American public for fools -- well, maybe not all of us -- only the ones that think crappy shows like TMZ, Extra! and Entertainment Tonight are "real news". She keeps saying that she wants everything to "just die down", but the damn woman keeps doing television interviews. That's like saying "I eat two sheets of chocolate cake a day, but I can't seem to lose weight".

What an idiot. The Octo-Mom can kiss my Octo-Butt.

Psyche!

In between working on a website project and writing my previous post, I happened to catch pieces of The Bachelor: After the Final Rose, including the part where he totally humiliated that poor girl by calling off the engagement on national TV. Man, that chick should have kicked him square in his obviously tiny testicles...

Like Money Down The Drain

With the Dow dropping another 300 points today, I just couldn't help but take a peek at the current status of my 401K. Cripes, I feel like I'm throwing money in a bottomless pit. Right now it seems like a terrible idea to keep contributing, but traditional wisdom says that I should. Hopefully some day in the future I'll look back and be glad that I stuck to my guns through these tough times.

Oh, my poor 401K...

1987-2009

My parents were supposed to come visit us this weekend to talk about wedding stuff, but events that unfolded during the week changed that. Instead, Selina's brother, Orlando, joined us in the trek down to Gonzales to attend the funeral services for a family friend, Christy Espinosa. Her father and my aunt are brother and sister, so while we weren't blood relatives, we did see her on holidays, especially since she and my cousin Jessalyn were practically inseparable. It was just coincidence that Orlanda and Christy happened to be classmates at Crockett High School here in Austin -- like they say, small world.

Those of you from the Austin area probably know about her story because of the brutality of her death. And by the way, I'm really disappointed by how the Austin American-Statesman decided to ruin a perfectly good story by tossing in that little bit about her having "at least one run-in with the law"...what a crock or crap. Anyway, I still can't wrap my mind around the fact that there are people out there capable of such heinous acts. Even though it won't change the fact that Christy's life was cut short, I hope the cowards that did this are brought to justice.

But on to less depressing things...

I finally finished up doing the details on the wall that Selina and I started painting during the middle of the week -- I think Selina and I did another fantastic job (pats self on back). I also hung the last set of blinds in the master bathroom (we just had a curtain up), tinkered with the sprinklers in the back yard in preparation of fertilizing and seeding, pulled about 500 weeds from the front yard and worked on other random things around the house. I tried working on the labels for the Save The Dates, but OpenOffice is terrible when it comes to trying to do this. Either that or I'm just terrible at using the software -- hell, I'm just going to do it at work using Microsoft Office.
